Impulsivity

Acting without forethought or consideration of consequences. A core symptom of ADHD that can manifest as interrupting others, making hasty decisions, or engaging in risky behaviors.

Overview

Impulsivity is one of the three core symptoms of ADHD, involving difficulty controlling immediate reactions and acting without considering consequences.

Detailed Description

Impulsivity in ADHD can manifest in many ways: interrupting others in conversations, making hasty decisions, difficulty waiting turns, acting without thinking, impulsive spending, risky behaviors, and difficulty inhibiting responses. This isn't about poor judgment or lack of consideration - it's a neurobiological difficulty with inhibitory control, a key executive function. The prefrontal cortex, which helps with impulse control, may function differently in individuals with ADHD.

How This Relates to ADHD

Impulsivity is a hallmark symptom of ADHD, particularly in the Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive and Combined presentations. It's closely related to executive function deficits, particularly inhibitory control.

Treatment and Management

Stimulant medications can improve impulse control. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help develop strategies for pausing before acting. Mindfulness practices and self-monitoring techniques can also be beneficial.

Examples

  • Blurting out answers before questions are completed
  • Difficulty waiting one's turn
  • Making impulsive purchases or decisions
