Hyperfocus
An intense, prolonged state of concentration on a single task or topic, often to the exclusion of everything else. Can be both a strength and a challenge for individuals with ADHD.
Overview
Hyperfocus is an intense state of concentration that many people with ADHD experience, which can be both a strength and a challenge.
Detailed Description
Hyperfocus involves becoming completely absorbed in a task or topic, often to the exclusion of everything else including time, hunger, or other responsibilities. While this can be a strength when channeled into productive activities, it can also be problematic when it prevents individuals from attending to important tasks or responsibilities. Hyperfocus is thought to occur when a task is highly engaging and provides sufficient stimulation for the ADHD brain.
How This Relates to ADHD
Hyperfocus demonstrates that people with ADHD can focus - the challenge is controlling what they focus on and when. It's one of the paradoxes of ADHD.
Treatment and Management
Learning to channel hyperfocus productively, using it strategically, and developing strategies to transition out of hyperfocus when needed can help manage this aspect of ADHD.
